Third Grade

The Third Grade online program will include a comprehensive study of Religion, Grammar, Phonics, LiteratureVocabulary, Penmanship, Math, Art, Science, and History. All subjects will be delivered in a live format, while some subjects are supplemented with videos and creative assignments, as designated by the instructor. The goal of each part of this program is to develop your child spiritually and academically in all necessary skills to progress to fourth grade. The focus is on developing basic technology skills, active reading skills, intellectual curiosity, and an authentic passion for learning. Below you will find details regarding the curriculum and books needs for this program. 

Art – Art will feature a monthly video focused on a famous artist from history. Students will be tasked with a monthly project to complete. It will match the artist’s style and will be geared towards the student’s grade level. 

Religion

Course Description:

Grade Three Religion develops the student’s understanding of God’s plan for the salvation of mankind.  It begins with Creation and covers the Incarnation, the redemptive act of the Crucifixion, and the birth of the Church at Pentecost.  The course introduces the student to the fullness of our life in the Church.  It shows how man begins to use his gifts in cooperation with God’s plan for mankind and His Church.  Special emphasis is placed on the two most important Sacraments in the Church, illustrating their relationship to each other and to the salvific mission of the Church.  In this year the study of the Mass begins.  The student sees it first as a sacrifice and then as a means for unifying Christ’s Church Militant.  The student will also look at the family as the environment God has created to form us in his image and likeness, and the importance of family prayer to gain the strength needed to meet the challenges facing us.

Course Description:

The Primary Literature program for Grades Three and Four, introduces the student to literature in a deeper, more rigorous fashion than a typical reading course.  The course is comprised of classic literature and the lives of saints.  

A well-rounded literature course for each year includes choices from both the novels and lives of saints.  Each Novel and most of the saint books include weekly written assignment topics.  The Study Question booklets include study questions that are perfect to use for a short quiz after the student has read the daily assignment.  Kolbe Academy has provided an extensive amount of literature to study over the course of 3rd and 4th grade.  

Third Grade Reading uses The Catholic National Reader, Book Three as the primary reader.  The reading program is based on mutual response: teacher reading & students listening; student reading & teacher & other students listening.  Vocal reading skill is to be practiced and developed; the child should read orally every day. 

Through this course, the student will:

  • Understand how learning develops from good reading habits
  • Be able to identify & describe what takes place & the point or objective of the author
  • Continue to develop a love of reading, strengthen his vocabulary skills by reading & learning new words from the books read
  • Improve composition skills in writing book reports

English 3

Course Description:

Phonics & Vocabulary

Third Grade Phonics brings the student into alphabetic sequence, all positions of consonants, hard and soft ‘c’ and ‘g’, short and long vowels, consonant blends, recognition of syllables, diphthongs, prefixes, and word types.  The student will also look at prefixes, base words, and suffixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms, homographs, and dictionary skills.  Phonics C begins with easy material, and the child should be able to complete most of the work with very little help.  Much in the phonics book reinforces what the student learns in English and Spelling. The students will also use Sadlier’s leveled vocabulary workshop to further solidify their knowledge of language, connotation and denotation. 

English Grammar & Composition

Voyages in English offers comprehensive language arts instruction.  It builds students’ confidence as effective writers, readers, listeners, and speakers.  The textbook is organized into two related yet distinct parts: grammar and writing.  The course includes lessons which integrate these two parts to show the relationship between grammar and writing.

In addition to a full grammar course (including sentence diagramming), the third-grade text also provides instruction in writing personal narratives, personal letters, how-to articles, book reports, persuasive writing, creative writing, and research reports.

World History 3: Stories of a Changing World

Course Description:

Third Grade History uses biographical accounts of history to study the fascinating lives of our history’s heroes and Saints.  This unit study model makes for a dynamic curriculum by introducing young children to history with short biographical sketches sure to catch a child’s imagination.

Course Description:

If you would like to add enrichment to your child’s history and geography curriculum, consider purchasing this geography text to work through at your own pace. Apply the geography lessons to the world around the child: The World in Spatial Terms, Places and Regions, Physical Systems, Human Systems, Environment and Society, The Uses of Geography.

Mathematics (Progress in Mathematics)

Course Description:

Grade Three Mathematics is directed to expanding the principles of the four functions that were begun in the second grade: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  These four functions are the underpinnings of all that will be studied in arithmetic.  Essentially, the course will involve the use of both inductive and deductive activities.

Progress in Mathematics begins with reviews of what the student has already learned.  It then covers:

Course Description:

Third Grade Science is a basic introduction to the life, earth, and physical sciences.  The most important part of teaching science in the early years is helping the student see the wonders of God’s world, and making him unafraid of the subject when he pursues in depth science in later years.  Children learn more from doing the experiments and investigations alongside the reading of the textbook.

The Harcourt Science series has the availability of several online learning tools to anyone who purchases the textbook.  The first is provided by the publisher, Harcourt.  There are several supplementary activities for the student and teacher on this website.  Another website is provided by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA).  This website allows you to select the topic you are studying in the book, and will take you to a page of selected website links that can help you to enhance and further develop the topics that your child is studying.  The online resources are a wonderful addition to the activities provided within the text itself.

Math Lab 

Elementary studentwho need remediation and extra support in Math can sign up for this supplemental live Math Lab to work through foundational concepts with the guidance of a Kolbe instructor. The class will meet once a week for 30 minutes to go over math facts, homework assignments, and questions that arise while completing assignments throughout the week.  

Art Masters Program Opt-In 

K-5 online students may opt-in to our Art Attacks: Marvelous Masters Program. In this program students are introduced to a famous historical artist and style each month through an instructor led video and lesson. The students will complete the lesson on their own time and post their completed work each month on the Schoology course page for a Pass grade at the end of each quarter. If you choose not to opt into this course, you will not have access to the art course and will not be issued a grade for art on your child’s grade report for K-5 online.  

Music and PE Reporting Opt-In 

K-5 online families may opt into our Music and PE reporting option. By opting into the Music and PE course, you have the ability to submit samples of PE activities or Music instruction that occurs outside of Kolbe to be included on your child’s grade report at the end of each quarter. As a K-5 Kolbe Online student, Music, Art, and PE are not required. However, by opting into this, you have the flexibility to report your enrichment activities to us to keep them on record.

Typing and Technology

Course Description:

In 3rd-5th grade, the students will be gradually introduced to technology concepts such as typing, digital citizenship, Adobe Connect and Schoology independence, etc. The teacher will provide resources and instruction for the students to grow in these skills.
